A change of direction has been underway in Syria over the last few days, following a sudden upheaval in the political situation and the fall of Damascus, which led to the long-awaited departure of the Assad clan.

Here are some images of Syria taken in July 2002, during a two-week visit through the country.

You can see more photographs of the Middle East (Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon) on my Website.

Al-Khiyam is a village in southern Lebanon. It is famous for the prison located there, which the Israelis transformed into a detention centre in which some 3,000 men and women, Lebanese but also Palestinians, active resistance fighters or ordinary inhabitants refusing to collaborate with Israel, were locked up between 1985 and 2001.

The prison was turned into a museum in 2000.

The Israeli air force destroyed the site during its bombing campaign in 2006.

In 2003, the journalist Véronique Ruggirello published « Khiam, prison de la honte » (@editions.harmattan), the testimony of 12 former prisoners.

In 2014, Souha Bechara, a Lebanese activist who was detained for ten years in Khiam, published a book about her imprisonment, « La Fenêtre, camp de Khiam » (@editionselyzad).

The photographs were taken in summer 2004.

I will exhibit four photographs at the Community Hall in Arrigas (France) between July 23 and August 7, 2022, together with five others artists.

The exhibition "Regards d'artistes" will show paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos and collages, and is organized by the Cultural Committee of the Arrigas Municipality.

The photographs are part of the project I started for a few years ago about Arrigas, a village in the Gard department in southern France and located in the Cévennes mountains range.

You can read and see more about the project here.

The opening is on Saturday 23, at 5 pm

Welcome to Arrigas !
